Yes, I'm no fun.

I can't show you pictures of what I bought because...they are presents!
The fair was huge this year. Slam packed by 2pm. Slammed and packed. Did I mention that I did not have a bloody mary even though I really really wanted one?

-Below are just a few of the many vendors that I loved.
I especially loved nolinoli's baby rattles. They are filled with beans. I also think it's great there's a huge hunk of beeswax sitting right there on the table, because that's how the wood is conditioned. Oh, I also really like that he has mushrooms on his T-shirt.

This may have been a good thing for all involved. We have a thriving hive that got knocked down by a bear one night, in spite of the electric fence. B scared off the bear and harvested a frame when he put the stacks back right. You notice how dry that previous sentence is. You may also notice that I'm not saying anything about the epi pen. But everyone was okay, (bear pride excluded) in the end. And we got some lovely honey.
In the picture on the left you can see our lovely rooster. He's a nice guy! And was pretty curious to see if the honey was a snack for him.
B poured the footer yesterday. I alas was here working on departmint. Forms for the walls are next! I've never been so excited about concrete in my entire life. But wait, that's not quite true. There was one other time......
When I was in kindergarten we lived close enough to our school to walk. I was very proud when I was finally allowed to walk 'by myself' My older sister (by two years) was supposed to walk home with me, but we got into some kind of kurfuffle. Reason long unremembered. I ran on ahead, right into a newly poured sidewalk. I swear the concrete went right up to my knee.
When confronted by the super scary guy in the helmet I pulled my foot out, sans shoe and ran (wee wee wee) all the way home. The one thing I clearly remember, besides what it's like to run home with a sock full of wet cement, was my true and terrible fear about how angry my mom would be when she found out about my sock. Go figure.

A few weeks ago, I left my place of employment and meandered through Union Square.
There I happened upon a crazy and wonderful scene. At first I thought is was an art exhibit, but dear reader, I was wrong. I forgot it was Sukkot. Yes, it's true. I forgot. It was an exhibition of winning sukkah re-designs.
It was very cool.
As dusk arrived however, things got a little strange. After I got some distinctly non holiday food, I stood across the street from the park and waited for the M14A (or as I like to call it 'the forever worm'). A diverse group of people were trying to get everyone to 'connect for peace for just five minutes' with these bright blue kind of bungee cord things. There were clips involved. I distinctly remember seeing clips. They had microphones. There was world music.
I did not feel up to connecting, in fact no one walking by was really into having a consciousness raising experience with blue clippy things except the schizophrenic (my term, not his) in the rainbow afro wig. But even he got bored and wandered off. So I'm watching and waiting, waiting and watching until I realize I've been waiting over 20 minutes for my bus.
I think to myself, I could have connected for peace four times in a row by now.
Then I think to myself, hey I'm waiting for the bus for peace! I'm holding my bag so no one gets my wallet for peace! I'm going home for peace.
That last one, was definitely true.betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11985148547612323819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241498642863981124.post-90277628015921965502010-09-19T19:13:00.001-04:002010-12-05T20:52:40.032-05:00got engaged. He has bees and chickens and me. I have bees and chickens and him. He will remain anonymous in this blog. I will refer to him as 'B'. But as a little teaser, here he is holding the baby starling I'd been rehabilitating. We named him Gripper and he has been happily repatriated with his people. Right now B is digging the foundation for our workshop in PA and I am blogging away on my new and improved blog on the Lower East Side. At least my cat is there. Oh Stella.
I'm leaving my earlier posts up because why not.
I would eat it if I didn't think it would make me really really sick.
One more secret secret thing to tell you....
I have a new boyfriend and he's going to make me a drum carder.
betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11985148547612323819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241498642863981124.post-63646027912432184872009-01-15T20:23:00.001-05:002009-01-15T20:26:20.416-05:00the land of the lazy blog

buckwheat hull pillow
Originally uploaded by betsy ply
Well, I like this picture, and I feel like writing but I don't feel like writing about this picture.
I should be putting stuff on etsy right now. But it's cold outside and I believe I am wearing my crabby pants. I'm still ruminating on the cough drop question. I'm also so very very close to buying a drum carder of my very own. Oh how I want my very own drum carder, let me count the ways. Well right now there is about 500 dollars of NO DRUMCARDER FOR YOU to be counted.
So this is the deal, I'm selling on etsy specifically to get this drum carder, and maybe a big marble slab to make cough drops on, or maybe fudge, or just cookies. Marble slabs are good for making pie too.
But wait... I have a marble slab. My painting table. Unfortunately it's not 'food friendly' any more.
But wait..... I want a drum carder anyway! All etsy proceeds will not go toward a marble slab, of this you can be sure.betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11985148547612323819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241498642863981124.post-24175895001930120582009-01-13T21:20:00.000-05:002009-01-15T20:02:51.887-05:00cough dropsJen and I have been 'facebooking' (is that a real word?) each other this afternoon about cough drops. We've both been stupid ill again. I bought myself an economy bag of halls, and an economy bag of ricola. I decided to not get the sugar free ones because 'sugar free' is a euphemism for 'really weird crap'.
Jen suggest I get sugar free, I demurred and we did a little back and forth about corn syrup -vs aspartame. Then I decided that what the hell, I don't have enough stuff to do. Jen and I should make our own. I just looked on line (for my preliminary research) and didn't see any inspiring recipes then I remembered this book I have.....

I bought this book for two whole dollars at a flea market in Mechanicsburg PA. I am not kidding you.

But I digress.
Here's the recipe in this book for how to make cough drops.
Listed under-

Cough Candy (Medicated) ---To five pounds of candy just ready to pour on the slab, add the following mixture, and form it into sticks. To be kind to myself I can say -at least I was working on something. Now I'm writing poetry. I guess it's kind of a backlash for not doing music right now. I'm sorry Nicole. I'm sorry Rebecca.
I will be a good girl from now on.
I was tagged by both these lovely ladies and promptly did nothing about it. I'm fixing that alacrity of inaction right now. I'm taking it to the streets and stuff like that.
Yeah.
So here's the first part, some random things about me besides I don't always do things in a timely fashion. Rules and links follow below.

1. I used to have straight hair. No really. I did. My hair turned curly around the time I turned 14. No one knew what to do with that kind of craziness in suburban Pennsylvania. I had bangs when my hair went curly. This was a bad thing. This was a deep hair wrongness.
There should be a special place in the world that all curly haired people get an invited to on the investiture of their curliness. This invitation would be to a place where no humidity exists and 'blowout' is a 7 letter word never to be spoken out loud. Lessons will be given in hedge-cutting and alternative uses for mayonnaise. This is the world I want to live in.

2. I frequently mispronounce words. Why? Mostly because I've never actually said or heard the word used in polite conversation before. This can be an issue for some people, especially if the word happens to be 'tangential'.

3. I have a really vivid and startling dream life. My dream last night involved my close friend Ranu. She lives in San Fransisco with her darling triplets and her handsome husband. In this dream, a friend of hers gave her a pair of cowboy boots that they had custom made for her. They had a horizon line half way up each boot and when you stood in the boots, they made a complete picture of a sunset. all the way around. I remember that she was fascinated by the fact that each boot had 4 zippers in it and when the boots were unzipped they unfolded like flowers. They were pink on the inside. I believe I was just visiting in the dream, there was a weird segue where I spent a lot of time trying to meet someone under some scary underpasses. Then I was back at Ranu's house. She had this sentient piece of paper and we were trying to get it to answer questions about what I should do. But it would only write the answers while you weren't watching it. It was teasing us by writing everything backwards.
Because my dreams are so vivid, I always feel it's my responsibility to let people know they were in them. Or else I feel like I've been gossiping about them. I don't like to feel sly.

4. I'm fascinated by the idea of poetry but can't stand having it read aloud.
It's like having someone lick your face at a party. It's like announcing what kind of medication you're on at the company meeting. I'm so not kidding about this.

5. I frequently call things that may be considered green -blue. but I'm not color blind. I think I just prefer that color that I'm calling blue that's actually green to be blue because I like that color better as blue, even if it is technically a green color. It would look blue if I put it next to a greener color, so why can't I call it blue if I want to. Most friends avoid this topic with me.

6. I saw a ghost when I was ten.

And now for the rules:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they have been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

And now for the links:

linda of knit a bird snorkel
bev of square animals
our lady of the yarn snob
miss birney
andrea of badbirds
goosefleshbetsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11985148547612323819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241498642863981124.post-86387305614223024942009-01-10T18:35:00.001-05:002009-01-10T18:35:36.618-05:00on the bobbin

on the bobbin
Originally uploaded by betsy ply
yep. It will be way not done, but check anyway
5. begin soup

6. cut up the onions, garlic, and put them in the big pot with oh, a lot of really nice olive oil. If you want to get a mania gold star, use half butter half olive oil. I didn't. I used all the butter in the Irish Soda Bread that you make whilst Waiting for Guests. (recipe to follow)
7. while the onions and garlic are doing their thing (don't burn them unless you want to because then you end up with remorse soup instead of mania soup) cut up all the herbs and think about sad things because the onions are making you cry. At least you think it's the onions. You might just be tired and anxious because you decided to not make soup, yet here you are making soup.
8. Wipe your eyes with a 'clean' bathroom towel.
9. Zest lemon. Chop up the zest as fast as you can! Wow. I love to do that. Add to the pot. Juice the lemon and add the juice to the pot as well. Pick out the seeds you accidentally put in the soup.
9. turn off burner and go get laundry out of the washer. Put laundry in dryer.

10. Put 6 cups of water in the pot with both turkey legs. Yes, on the bone or else your soup will taste like ass. Does the liquid cover them? No? Crap.
So add 2 cups of water with the dissolved bullion.

11. Bring pot to a boil. Turn down heat and cover pot and let simmer.
12. Run downstairs to get laundry out of the dryer before someone steals your foundation garments. Can you remember if you turned the burner off? No. Crap. Go back and check.

13. pull turkey legs out of pot and put on a plate to cool.
14. put one cup of rice in the pot and bring back to a simmer and cover. Did you remember to rinse the brown rice? No? It's okay, at least you can blame your crappy soup on something now.
15. pour yourself a drink.

16. Try to do something productive while the rice cooks.

17. When the rice is cooked add the de-boned meat off the turkey legs back into the pot.
18. Salt and pepper to taste.

Serve with pickles.
or, put it in the freezer and eat the frozen pizza.betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11985148547612323819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241498642863981124.post-9944789219507918032008-11-23T22:01:00.001-05:002008-11-23T22:01:01.170-05:00whoops, theres the painting

whoops, theres the painting
Originally uploaded by betsy ply
well, I finished it. 16"x16" of painting madness.
